John Coltrane

When my then-four-year-old grandson chose to give a report on John Coltrane in his transitional kindergarten class in 2025, I decided it was time to learn a little more about this jazz saxophonist.

Lucky for me, I got access to a video of that presentation, and I learned that Coltrane was born in North Carolina, just like my grandson. I also found out that Coltrane played saxophone and was a “jazz giant!” Also, that jazz is G-Dad’s “fravorite” kind of music.

A few more things you might want to know: Coltrane worked with the biggest jazz musicians during the 1940s and ’50s, including Dizzy Gillespie, Duke Ellington and Miles Davis. His music is still beloved by jazz fans today, and his albums “Giant Steps” and “My Favorite Things” are considered classics.

Coltrane died from liver cancer at 40 years old in 1967.
